Suzdal

Suzdal Merchant

Description:

Suzdal Merchant (about the flowering of merchants in Suzdal in the XVII - XIX centuries) - city and posad temples, merchant and philistine houses, the economy and life of the city of that time.

The amazing abundance of churches in the city is a long tradition. In the XVl. on 414 yards in Suzdal there were 49 temples. It was in the XVl century that Suzdal monasteries began the mass construction of brick churches.

The first half of the XVll century is a black stripe for Suzdal. In the Time of Troubles, when the city is robbed by Mr. Lisovsky, the number of inhabitants is reduced, it is assumed, by almost 10 times (in the country - by half). They did not have time to recover from the Troubles - in 1634 the Crimean Tatars ravaged the city. After 10 years, the fire burns half of Suzdal, and after 10 years, the plague kills almost half of the citizens.

However, from the middle of the XVll century, after the Posad reform, the economic flourishing of Suzdal, standing on trade routes (including the Stromansky highway Moscow - Nizhny Novgorod), begins again. It is no coincidence that over the next 100 years, non-poor citizens built almost all 30 existing and 14 demolished in the XX century. And, symbolically, the first stone temple on Posada was the temple of the Resurrection of Lazarus (1667). Of the population of Suzdal in 1783, about 4,500 people (in provincial Vladimir - 3584 people) in the merchant were 1640 citizens; in the city there were 17 leather, 7 malt, 3 brick, 3 linen factories, a silk factory, 14 forges and 164 shops. Those who became too crowded left, as, for example, Nikolai Sinebrykhov in 1819, who founded brewing in Finland. Relatives and descendants of those merchants still live in Suzdal, own family homes, build hotels and recall the times of Soviet “curemonious millionaires”.
