Suzdal

Suzdal losses.

Description:

You can often hear how unusually preserved Suzdal, despite all the vicissitudes of the twentieth century., “City of Kitezh” – here it is. The Red Wheel has also come here.

No one knows exactly how much was lost in Russia. It is assumed that since 1917, 25-30 thousand churches, about fifty monasteries, up to 50 thousand monuments of civil architecture have been destroyed or become ruins. 90% of the noble estates disappeared, and many of the surviving ones were in ruins. At least 20 million icons have died. Vladimir lost a third of churches, Yaroslavl – almost half, Ivanovo – three quarters.

In the God-saved city of Sujdal, three-quarters of the temples are preserved. But they did, too. The city lost 14 churches and 13 bell towers, destroyed ALL ancient church fences and, with the exception of the Kremlin Cathedral, almost ALL iconostasis. Of the 249 bells on the bell towers remained 13, died, including 1050 pood from the Kremlin bell tower.

1922 – seizure of church valuables under the pretext of helping the starving Volga region. On May 19, 7 chests and 2 boxes (total weight 90 poods of 32 pounds) of church precious utensils were handed over to the Gubifinot department. 1923 – all 4 monasteries, the Cathedral of the Nativity of the Virgin, 14 parish and 2 cemetery churches were closed. 1926 – at the request of the Political Administration, which occupied the Savior-Eufimiev Monastery as a political isolator, the Athanasievo Church began to be dealt with for “construction needs”. It started...

There is no question of a program to restore the lost. All that was restored is 2 bell towers of Posad temples and the tomb of D.M. Pozharsky. Another 2 chapels mark the places of the fallen temples - Pokhvalynsky and the Nativity of the Virgin.
