Description:
The unique Pokrovsky Monastery traces its history back to 1364. During this time, his fate was both periods of prosperity and decline. At different times, prisoners languished here, experiments were conducted and discoveries were made. Today the Pokrovsky Monastery is active.
The pearl of the monastery is the Three-Headed Pokrovsky Cathedral.
Initially, the Pokrovsky Monastery was laid wooden and subsequently rebuilt and expanded several times. The buildings that have come down to us, for the most part, date back to the XVI century.
In tsarist times, the monastery was often used to imprison noble women. In different years they were the wives of kings, Evpraxia Pozharskaya, Princess Anastasia Vasilievna and others.
At the beginning of the XX century under the Bolsheviks the monastery was destroyed. In the thirties of the XX century, it housed a military laboratory for the development of chemical weapons, which developed a vaccine for tularemia, an infection that affects the lymph nodes.
In the second half of the XX century, buildings began to be restored and placed in them a museum, hotel, concert hall. Since 1992, the monastery has again become active.
