Christmas Cathedral (Suzdal)
M7, Suzdal, Vladimir Region, Russian Federation 585 m C
Description:
For the first time the Nativity Cathedral is mentioned in the oldest Russian chronicle - Lavrentievskaya (1222), allegedly it was built on the former part of the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Most Holy Theotokos. But half a century later, at the behest of Yuri Dolgoruky, it was dismantled, because it had a weak foundation and could collapse at any moment.
Soon a stone cathedral was erected with a deep pit and a powerful foundation. In architecture, it resembled the Assumption Church and was so named for some time. But after 3 years of construction, Bishop Simeon (Rostovsky) consecrated it and called it the Christmas Cathedral.
From that moment to our time, this cathedral was destroyed many times by raids of the Kazan khan, fires, etc. But then, again and again, but each time acquired a new architecture and style.
It should be noted that on the threshold of the XX century, service in this cathedral was prohibited. And only in the early 90s it resumed.
In 2005, the Christmas Cathedral after a long 7 years of restoration was opened for visitors. The cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is in this place that the sons of Yuri Dolgoruky, as well as other personalities of Russia, rest.
The cathedral is open 6 days a week, so everyone can see it. Located on the street Kremlin, 20. You can get there by bus number 2, 3 to the stop "Trading Square", and then walk a little.
