Suzdal

Smolensk church with bell tower

d. Suzdal, Vladimir Region, Russia

Description:

The Smolensk Church of Suzdal is an Orthodox church, as well as a monument of Russian architecture of the 17-18 centuries.

The building itself was erected in 1696-1706 in Skuchitikha, a settlement that is part of the Spaso-Evrimiev Monastery, and is located in the northern part of Suzdal. The building was only a summer temple for the locals. A little later, a winter church and a classical bell tower were built near it. In the middle of the last century, the church was waiting for restoration.

The five-domed church has a cubic shape, in massive wide walls there are three high-positioned windows. They are marvelously framed by semi-windows, which were borrowed from ancient Greek culture.

This unique temple is undoubtedly an amazing sight and part of the history of our ancestors, and sometimes it is incredibly interesting to get acquainted with it. And it is easy to get to the church: it is a 30-minute walk from the bus station, first south to the Trading Square along Lenin Street, then east on the street. Vasilievskaya, outside the town.
