The Holy Gate with the Annunciation Gate Church

Russia, Vladimir region, Suzdal, str. Pokrovskaya

Description:

Pokrovsky Monastery in Suzdal was founded by Prince Dmitry, who, according to legend, got on the way here in severe weather, and as a sign of the safe completion of the trip decided to build a monastery. Here, Tsar Basil III kept his lawful wife in prison, with whom, contrary to the church order, he decided to divorce because of the lack of children.

The Holy Annunciation Gate with the gate church is one of the main attractions of the monastery. They were built in 1515. This building was not only a temple, but also a real defensive structure. A small church was built between the two arches.

Between the golden domes on the aisles there is also a small tower with narrow windows.

The facade is decorated with small details in the style of wood carving. It has been redesigned several times, and the current appearance was acquired only in 1958 by the project of A. D. Varganov.

It was at this time that the entire monastery complex was reconstructed, and a museum was opened in it. But, unfortunately, not for long - soon most residential buildings occupied the restaurant and hotel complex. Only in the early nineties of the last century the monastery gradually returned its original purpose. Now the Holy Gate, like the whole complex, is under the protection of UNESCO.
