The Refectory Church

Russia, Suzdal, St. Pokrovskaya, 76

Description:

Zachatev Refectory Church is located on the territory of the Holy Intercession Women's Monastery, which represents one of the most interesting sights of Suzdal. The stone temple was erected on the site of a former wooden church in 1551 by Ivan the Terrible, in memory of his deceased daughter Anna. In its style, the church can be attributed more to Polish than Russian architecture.

It is assumed that the architect of the Zachatjevo church was a Polish master, invited by order of Helena Glinskaya, the wife of Grand Duke Vasily III. A large church building is crowned with a headboard. Simple white walls are decorated with a diamond-shaped ornament of small brick. On the first floor of the building there are utility rooms, and on the second there is a spacious refectory hall with majestic vaults.

From the edge rises a six-sided hour bell tower. In the church you can see the shrine of the Pokrovsky monastery - Raka with the relics of St. Sophia of Suzdal. As well as a rare icon “The Conception of Righteous Anna”, which depicts the meeting of Joachim and Anna – the parents of the Virgin. Before this icon pray for healing from infertility.

You can get to this attraction by rail to Vladimir, and from there by bus or taxi.
