The base of the city: a fortress on the southern border
Tambov was founded in 1636 by decree of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich. In the XVII century, the Russian state actively strengthened the southern borders from the raids of the Crimean Tatars and Nogais. For this purpose defensive lines and fortresses were built.
Voivode Roman Boborykin chose a place on the high bank of the Tsny River. Here was built a wooden fortress with towers, ramparts and moats. The name of the city, according to one version, came from the Mordovian word “tomba” or “tamba”, associated with the marshy terrain.
Tambov was originally a military settlement. The garrison protected the borders of the state, and around the fortress gradually settled service people, peasants, artisans and traders.
XVII-XVIII centuries: from fortress to trading city
By the end of the seventeenth century, the danger of constant raids decreased. Tambov began to develop as the center of the agricultural region. The Black Earth lands were extremely fertile, and peasants from other regions of Russia moved here.
In the XVIII century, the city became an important administrative center. During the reforms, Peter I Tambov was included in the system of new provincial reforms. And in 1779, under Catherine II, the Tambov governorship was formed, later the Tambov province.
The city gradually acquired the features of a typical provincial center:
administrative buildings were built;
Fairs were opened;
trade in bread, cattle and cloth;
There were schools and churches.
A special role in the development of the city was played by the poet and statesman Gavriil Derzhavin, who was the governor of Tambov in 1786-1788. He was responsible for the improvement of the city:
opened a public school;
contributed to the development of the theater;
Improved urban governance;
Organized medical care.
It was under Derzhavin that Tambov began to turn not only into an administrative, but also into a cultural center of the region.
XIX century: the flourishing of the provincial center
In the XIX century, Tambov experienced a period of economic growth. The region was considered one of the main agricultural regions of the Russian Empire. Huge volumes of grain were sent from here to other provinces and for export.
After the construction of railways in the second half of the XIX century, the city became an important transport hub. This accelerated development:
the milling industry;
trade;
banking;
handicraft production.
There are people in town:
grammar schools;
libraries;
printing presses;
theaters;
public meetings.
The architectural appearance of Tambov was largely formed at that time. Until now, in the city center, buildings of the XIX century in the style of classicism and eclecticism have been preserved.
Tambov uprising
One of the most dramatic events in the history of the region was the Tambov Uprising, also known as the Antonov Rebellion.
After the Revolution and the Civil War, the Soviet government pursued a policy of pro-supplementing - the forced seizure of grain from peasants. This caused strong discontent among the population.
In 1920, a large-scale peasant uprising began under the leadership of Alexander Antonov. The rebels controlled large areas of the Tambov province.
To suppress the uprising, the Soviet leadership sent a large force of the Red Army under the command of Mikhail Tukhachevsky. The suppression was accompanied by severe repression, the establishment of camps and the use of chemical weapons against rebels in forested areas.
These events left a deep mark on the memory of the region and are still the subject of historical debate.
Tambov during the Great Patriotic War
During the Great Patriotic War, Tambov was not occupied, but played an important role as a rear center.
In the city:
hospitals were working;
evacuated enterprises were located;
military specialists were trained;
units of the Red Army were formed.
Many residents went to the front. The economy of the city was rebuilt for military needs.
After the war, restoration and active industrialization began.
Soviet period
In the second half of the XX century Tambov became a major industrial and educational center.
Developed:
engineering;
chemical industry;
instrumentation;
food industry.
New microdistricts, universities, scientific institutions appeared.
During the Soviet years, the city actively developed cultural life:
theaters;
philharmonic;
museums;
libraries.
Many famous figures of science and culture are associated with Tambov, including Ivan Michurin, after whom the nearby city of Michurinsk is named.
