Tver

Old Volga bridge

Tver, Tver region, Russia

Description:

The bridge was built by Czech engineer L. I. Mašek in 1897-1900. It is noteworthy that the Old Volga Bridge is now called by the people Old, and the Novovolzhsky Bridge is New, despite the fact that it was the Starovolzhsky Bridge after its opening that was called “new” – and the pontoon bridge located downstream of the Volga was called “old”.

The contour of the Starovolzhsky bridge resembles the outlines of chain hanging bridges, light and elegant. Earlier on the bridge adorned magnificently executed, artistic casting lanterns, which later decorated the Theater Square of the city.

During the occupation of the city by the Nazis, the bridge was blown up, but it was restored just a few months after its liberation. In 1982-1985, a great deal of work was carried out on the reconstruction of the bridge, but the exterior of the structure was preserved in its original form. Car traffic on the bridge is designed for 2 lanes.
