Interior of the Assumption Cathedral

Description:

The Assumption Cathedral is an interesting monument of ancient Russian history and art, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. For a long time the cathedral was the main temple of Ancient Russia. It married Vladimir and Moscow princes, including Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Ivan Kalita. In the XV century, the temple served as a model for the Italian architect Aristotle Fioravanti for the construction of the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin.

In the cathedral was the main Russian shrine - the Vladimir Icon of the Mother of God. Until now, we can admire fragments of unique paintings of the XII century and frescoes of the XV century by famous icon painters Andrei Rublev and Daniil Cherny.

The ancient Russian necropolis is preserved in the cathedral - more than 40 burials of the Vladimir Grand Duke's family and Vladimir bishops. Visitors will see the burials of Princes Andrei Bogolyubsky, Vsevolod the Big Nest, George Vsevolodovich and a symbolic tomb with a piece of relics of Alexander Nevsky.
