Golden Horn Bay
Description:
Peter the Great Bay became known in Europe only in 1852, thanks to a French whaler who accidentally wintered in Posiet Bay. According to some reports, the same whale visited the Golden Horn Bay in 1851.
In 1856, the ship "Winchester" of the Anglo-French squadron, searching for the Russian squadron during the Crimean War, visited the Golden Horn Bay. At that time, the bay had only a Chinese name, translated as “Golden Trepang Bay”. The British called it Port May.
In 1859, the Governor-General of Eastern Siberia Nikolai Nikolayevich Muravyov-Amursky, bypassing the shores of Peter the Great Bay on the ship, paid special attention to the well-covered bay. It resembled the Golden Horn Bay in Istanbul, and the governor-general proposed to call it the same, and on the banks of the bay ordered to establish a military post, which he also named Vladivostok.
The bay is located in the center of Vladivostok and is intensively used in the urban economy. Its shores are almost all over equipped with mooring facilities and are occupied by the parking of ships. On the shores of the bay there are Vladivostok Commercial Sea Port, Vladivostok Fish Port, Dalzavod shipyard, as well as parts of the Pacific Fleet. As a result of careless use, the ecology of the Golden Horn is in distress. On its surface floating garbage and visible oil film of petroleum products.
There are claims that in a biological sense, the bay is dead, since severe water pollution prevents the access of light and, accordingly, the saturation of water with oxygen.
