Str. Ion Ghica, 9, sector 3, Bucharest, Romania
Description:
The Church of St. Nicholas (or otherwise the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker) is an active Orthodox church located in Bucharest. One of the largest architectural sights of the Romanian capital.
The Church of St. Nicholas was built in 1909 according to the project of the Russian architect Mikhail Preobrazhensky. The same year, the building was consecrated.
During the two world wars, the temple was partially destroyed, but it was invariably restored.
In 1992, the Church of St. Nicholas became the official temple of the University of Bucharest, so people often hear the name "Student Church".
The monumental architect of the Church of St. Nicholas gravitates to the ancient Russian architectural style. The temple has seven domes, which were originally covered with pure gold. In addition, the church has a gilded carved iconostasis painted by Russian painter Viktor Vasnetsov.
Now the Church of St. Nicholas is under state protection, as an important historical and architectural monument, it is also very popular among all Orthodox tourists.
