str. G-ral Berthelot nr. 19, sector 1, Bucharest, Romania

Description:

St. Joseph's Cathedral is the largest Roman Catholic church in Budapest, the capital of Romania. The cathedral is one of the city’s most famous religious attractions, especially among Christian tourists.

St. Joseph’s Cathedral was built in 1884 by the design of the Dutch monk Alfonso Zegers, an architect by training. The interior design of the cathedral was done by the best artists of that time - the nave of the temple was painted by the painter Georg Roder from Munich, and Italian architects were engaged in stucco. The altar of the cathedral is made of the most valuable Carrara marble and decorated with skillful carvings.

In addition to its architectural merits, the church is also famous for its excellent acoustics. St. Joseph’s Cathedral is the most famous organ music venue in Romania. Concerts and performances are regularly held here.

In 1999, St. Joseph’s Cathedral was visited by Pope John Paul II and served a Sunday service here. Since then, the cathedral has enjoyed considerable popularity among Catholics of Bucharest and throughout Europe.
