Henri Coanda International Airport
Description:
Henri Coanda Airport (creator of the world’s first jet-powered aircraft project Coandă -1910) is the largest international airport in Romania, which is located in the suburb of Otopeni, 16.5 kilometers from Bucharest.
During the Second World War, a military base of the Third Reich was located on the territory of the modern airport. Until 1965, the terminal and the 1,200-meter runway were also used by the Romanian Air Force.
On April 13, 1970, a new terminal building opened with a capacity of 1.2 million passengers per year. The length of the updated runway was 3,500 meters (the second runway was built in 1986).
By the 1990s, the airport was able to accommodate up to 1,200 passengers per hour and serve up to 35 takeoffs and landings during the same time.
The next reconstruction project involves the construction of four halls with a total capacity of up to 20 million passengers per year. The terminal will be connected to the A3 Bucharest-Brasov highway, railway and metro.
