Aurel Vlaikou International Airport

Description:

Aurel Vlaikou International Airport is located in the Benyas area, 8.5 kilometers from Bucharest.

The history of the airport is associated with the first flights of French pilot Louis Brelio, performed by him in 1909. Three years later, the first flight school in Romania was opened.

Since 1920, the French-Romanian airline CFRNA began cooperation with the airport, which then made a significant contribution to its development. The first terminal building was built in the late 1940s. In shape, it resembled a three-blade propeller aircraft and at that time was one of the main attractions of the city. It was for this reason that the airport could not be rebuilt, and over time it ceased to cope with the growing passenger traffic.

Since 2000, such budget companies as Blue Air, Sky Europe, Wizz Air, Germanwings have cooperated with the airport.

In 2007, a plan was adopted for the reconstruction of the airport, according to which its capacity should reach more than three million passengers per year.
