Description:
After World War II, 1984-1989, the southern quarters of Bucharest changed a lot if you compare the map of Bucharest in the 1980s with the map of the modern city. Bucharest’s widest street, Unification Boulevard, no longer exists. Large parts of it, 13 September Avenue and Freedom Boulevard also disappeared. These streets were located in front of the House of the People.
On this place were narrow streets, built up with magnificent houses of the XIX century. In 1984, the streets were destroyed and construction of a new city center began. The new architecture resembled the construction of the capital of North Korea (Pyongyang).
The main part of the construction of the Civil Center was the People’s House. The goal was to create a city within the city. In the new city center, according to the idea, state governing bodies should be located. It was planned to settle state officials.
Former residents of the district were given tiny apartments in the north-west of Bucharest. In the city center were to live the heads of communist society.
