Timisoarsk Cathedral

Bulevardul Regele Ferdinand, Timiș oar, Romania

Description:

Timisoar Cathedral is the largest Orthodox church in Romania and the main religious attraction of Timisoara. In addition, this cathedral is considered one of the highest Orthodox churches in the world.

The cathedral in Timisoara was built in 1940, but due to the outbreak of war finishing work was delayed for a long sixteen years. The monumental architecture of the temple is striking – the cathedral has nine large pointed towers and four small ones, and the highest rises above the ground at ninety-six meters. Inside the temple can be up to 4000 parishioners at the same time.

But the cathedral is striking not only in size. Its unusual architecture, mixing Byzantine and traditional Moldovan styles, its beauty attracts the eye of every tourist. The inner and outer walls were painted by the famous artist Afanasy Demyan. And in the basements of the cathedral there is a rich collection of medieval religious art - there are many ancient icons of the sixteenth century and ancient Romanian manuscripts. The exhibition is always open to visitors and leaves few indifferent.
