Oh. Södermalm

The famous Swedish writer Karl Anton Wetterberg wrote about Södermalm: “My dear Söder, only here I want to live.” You gave Stockholm warmth and paint.”

Södermalm is the district and largest island of Sweden’s capital, Stockholm. Södermalm is connected to the Old Town by the Slussen Bridge. Since 2007, Södermalm has become an administrative district of the same name.

The first mention of Sedermalm dates back to 1288, and the real story begins in the XV century, when workers, cabbers and horse riders began to come to these places to sell cows, rams and bulls.
In Stockholm, such trade was not appropriate, so the sellers of cattle chose this southern place. Also in these parts there was the capital's harbor, which received ships from all over the world, as well as brisk and lively trade.

In the seventeenth century there is an active construction of housing for the working class and summer houses-pavilions for wealthy families.

In the nineteenth century, the construction of various factories began on the island, and Södermalm became a working quarter.

Now Södermalm has become the center of bohemian and nightlife. Head to Hornsgatan, Slussen and Hornsgatspuckeln – there are numerous shops and designer shops, cinemas, theaters and galleries. And on Götgatan street from evening to morning there are nightclubs, bars and restaurants for every taste and purse.

Tantolunden is a large picturesque park, which come for picnics and relax whole families, as well as young couples - lie on the grass, for athletes there are platforms for running, badminton and football. Bergsgruvan is another small park in which residents and guests of the city like to relax. Rosenlundsparken is an excellent green recreation area in the center of the island, where you can be alone with nature.

On the street Bastugatan is the museum of the Swedish writer Ivar Lo, he devoted his work mainly to the workers of Sweden.

In Södermalm preserved wooden houses of bright colors with oven heating and open windows in white frames, steep streets with pavers, residential tiled roofs of mansards with flowers. In these parts, it seems that Carlson lives somewhere in the neighborhood.

Brännkyrkagatan street is considered the steepest in the city, it descends from Maria trappgränd at an angle of 21 degrees.

The name "Sedermalm" in Swedish means "South Island", it is the largest in Stockholm, and is also known for hilly terrain and mountains, and therefore its second name is "South Mountains". From the northern part on Fjellgatan Street you can admire the panorama of the Old Town of Stockholm. Spectacular views also open from the hill Skinnarviksberget (near the Zinkensdamm metro station).
