Castle Old Bümplitz

Switzerland, canton of Bern, Bümplitz.

Description:

Very little is known about the first castle - a wooden round tower, wooden buildings and barrier walls. In the middle of the XIII century, a stone round tower was built on the site of a wooden tower. For that time it was an unusual architectural solution of the castle fortification: the outer diameter of the tower was 9.3 meters, the thickness of the walls was about two meters. To this day, the tower has not survived, only its location is known, marked on the terrace of the restaurant of the same name, which opened in the Old Bümplice.

Having fallen under the rule of Bern at the end of the XIII century, the castle remained unchanged until 1470, when it was rebuilt, turning it from a defensive medieval structure into a representative complex of residential and administrative buildings. In the XVIII century, the “old-fashioned” inconvenient buildings were replaced by a new castle – Neues Schloss B mpliz with outbuildings. Currently, the castle houses the Bümplitz archive, a conference room, offices and a restaurant.
