St. Ananias Chapel
Description:
The Chapel of St. Ananias is an ancient underground temple (crypta), which is located in Damascus, in the oldest quarter of the city, next to the Eastern Gate.
It is the only religious building preserved from the first century AD and belongs to the early Christian Byzantine period.
Presumably, the chapel was the house of St. Ananias, where, according to the chronicles, St. Paul was baptized. Saint Ananias himself was sentenced to death for preaching Christianity through stoning.
The chapel has a simple structure and consists of two rooms with empty walls, where there are several icons and benches.
