Port of Tartus

Tartus is the second largest port city in Syria after Latakia. In the port of the city was located the Soviet, and now the Russian naval base.

It is worth noting that this is the only domestic base outside the former USSR - the point of logistics of the Russian Navy, which can be based Russian warships in the Mediterranean Sea.

The military base has existed in Tartus since 1971, it was created to support the fleet’s operations in the Mediterranean Sea – repairing ships, supplying them with fuel and consumables. This facility is served by 50 Russian military sailors.
