Souk Al Hamidiya Market
Description:
Souk al-Hamidia is the largest retail market in Syria. It is located in the capital of the country, in the historical center of the city of Damascus and is famous for its antiquity.
Souk al-Hamidiyah refers to the covered markets: the bazaar begins from the Victory Gate and is almost a kilometer pass under a dark iron roof. At the end of this shopping street stand tall ancient columns - the remains of a Roman temple dedicated to Jupiter.
This place has long been a trading place, but the market received its modern appearance and name only in 1865, during the reign of Sultan Abdullah Hamid II. A little later, after numerous fires, the wooden roof of the market was replaced by iron.
Souk al-Hamidia sells everything from hookahs, silk and handmade carpets to gold, spices and traditional oriental sweets. In addition, the market is the famous ice cream café Bakdash - a local landmark of Souk al-Hamidia. Ice cream is made right here in the presence of visitors, and it is simply delicious.
Overall, Souk Al Hamidiya Market is a great place to shop. This is a bustling, bustling place, perfect for diving into the hectic atmosphere of Damascus and buying many souvenirs to remember Syria.
