Hijas Station
Description:
Hijas Station is an old railway station located in the capital of Syria, Damascus. Currently, the station is more a monument of architecture and a museum than a transport hub.
The Hejas station was built by the Turks in 1917 as the terminus of the Hejas railway line, through which Muslim pilgrims went to Mecca. Now the station has lost its importance, but its magnificent architecture authored by Spanish architect Fernando de Arando and interesting interior decoration saved the building from oblivion. The ceiling here is beautifully decorated with mosaics, and a lot of light gets inside through colored stained glass windows.
The building features an old steam locomotive from 1908, as well as an open cozy cafe. There is a bookstore nearby. And on the square in front of the station there is an old fountain, built at the same time as the station.
A visit to the Hejas station, of course, does not compare with a visit to the more pompous sights of Damascus - it is just a cozy, quiet place where you can relax and relax. This is what the station attracts tourists.
