Mount Bona

Mount Bona, Saint Elias Mountains, Alaska, USA

Description:

In Alaska, in the Cordillera system, the St. Elijah Ridge is located. In the north-west it converges with the Wrangel mountains, and in the west - with the Chugach mountains. Its length is more than 550 kilometers, and the highest peaks of Canada are part of this ridge. It is composed mainly by sedimentary rocks and, like many Alaska ridges, is subject to significant glaciation. And just like many of Alaska’s ridges, its slopes are covered with coniferous trees.

One of the mountains of St. Elijah is Mount Bona. This is a mountain peak on the border of Alaska and the Yukon Territory. It is an extinct volcano, the highest point of which is 5005 meters above sea level. The volcano is almost entirely covered with ice fields and glaciers.

This mountain got its name in honor of the racing yacht Bon. It was named so by the Italian prince and traveler Luigi Amedeo after his yacht, when in July 1930 he climbed the ridge of St. Elijah.
