Little Diomede Island

Alaska

Description:

In the Bering Strait there are two islands - Little Diomede and Big Diomede. They are the extreme points of the borders of the two great states – Russia and the United States, and are located at a distance of 35 kilometers from Alaska and Chukotka.

The territory of Big Diomede (Ratmanov Island) is owned by Russia, but

Little Diomede (known as Kruzenshtern Island) belongs to the United States. The distance between the islands is only 4160 meters, and two kilometers from each of them passes the State Border and the date line. A resident of the island of Kruzenshtern, moving only 2 kilometers to the west, falls immediately into the future for the day ahead. The island even has webcams, with which you can literally look the next day.

The island of Kruzenshtern is about 5 square kilometers, and in 2011 it was home to 135 indigenous Eskimos. In their language, the name of the island sounds like Ingalik. Despite the remoteness from the mainland, a school for children has been built and operates here, there is a shop. In good weather, a helicopter with mail arrives.

The life of the local population is associated with the extraction of walruses. Walruses for Eskimos are the meat, hunting gear and walrus bone they sell. However, on the island of Kruzenshtern (unlike the Russian island of Ratmanov) there are no walrus rookeries, so the local population extracts it in the sea.
