Bongoyo Island
Bongoyo Island, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
Description:
Bongoyo Island is an uninhabited island just north of Tanzania’s largest city, Dar es Salaam. It is the most visited island of the four islands of the Dar es Salaam Marine Reserve and a popular holiday destination for both tourists and locals.
The island has a very rocky coast and has only two beaches. The most visited is the beach in the northwest. Most boats are moored there, recreation areas and small restaurants are located. This beach is characterized by clean sea, white sand and good cuisine. The best way to get there is by boat from the Slipway Hotel.
The second, narrower beach is located on the northeastern side of the island, there are no places to relax and it is mostly empty.
The island is covered with dense forests within which there are several paths, but not every tourist will dare to take a walk on them because of the sharp cliffs that fall on the way.
In the north of the island, the ocean periodically creates a lagoon along the shore and several mangrove trees can be seen there.
