Jozani National Park
Description:
Jozani is Zanzibar’s first and only national park with the largest area of mature forest. It is located in a shallow depression between the bays of Chwak and Uzi. Seasonal floods led to a special microclimate, which gave the basis for the growth of unique flora and fauna. Jozani has become a haven for wildlife, including rare, endemic and endangered species. The main purpose of the national park is the preservation of forests and surrounding areas.
This is achieved through partnerships with local communities, for example, various plant transplants are initially funded by international sponsors. Currently, 80% of the entrance fees received from tourists are saved and used in the park.
Every year Zanzibar Park is visited by more than one hundred thousand tourists. The most unique animal in its forests is the leopard (Panthera Pardus adersi). Local legend says that this species was given a mythical status. People believe that an animal, like a ghost, can evaporate in the air.
Seagrass in mangrove forests is a major breeding ground for microorganisms, including open sea fish.
