Phrathad Doi Suthep Temple
Suthep, Mueang Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai 50200, Thailand
Description:
This is the most revered and most visited temple, which is located 16 kilometers southwest of Chiang Mai. To get to the temple, you need to overcome almost 300 steps, on the sides of which there are numerous statues of snakes. The staircase was built in 1557. You can also climb to the temple on the cable car. In the golden dome of the temple are kept shrines of Buddha.
Legend has it that here in 1384 a white elephant with the relics of the Buddha climbed to the top of Doi Suthep mountain with a height of 1,601 meters, reached it and lay down, after which the temple of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep would be erected in its place.
Now many tourists and pilgrims go up to the temple to worship the shrines and attach bells with their names to the fence or roof, which in the wind create a ringing. There are also many Buddhist rituals, such as walking around with a lotus flower around a golden Chedi. The observation deck offers a magnificent view of Chiang Mai.
