Description:
Wat Luang is a Buddhist temple built on the ruins of three temples: Wat Chedi, Wat Ho Tham and Wat Sukmin. Its construction began in the XIV century, when King Saen Muang Ma planned to bury the ashes of his father. The temple was built over 10 years and was completed by his wife.
The temple with a base diameter of 54 meters is built at a height of 82 meters, making it the largest building in Lanne. In 1468, a statue of the Emerald Buddha was erected in the eastern niche of the temple. After an earthquake in 1545, the statue was moved to Luang Prabang.
In the 1990s, the temple was reconstructed at the expense of UNESCO and the Japanese government.
