Wat Pra Si Temple

Samlarn and Ratchadamnoen Roads, Chiang Mai, Thailand

Description:

The symbol of the great capital of Siam - Ayuthaya - is the Temple of Wat Pra Si Sanphet, built at the beginning of the XV century by King Boromatrailokanat. The temple is made in the traditional style, and for a long time served as a center of pilgrimage. It was here that the famous golden statue of Buddha, whose height was more than sixteen meters, was located. The Burmese, who raided the holy site belonging to the entire royal family, turned the temple into ruins and removed the rich decoration. Wat Pra Si Sanphet is famous for the three surviving towers that are located in the main part of the temple. The eastern one is for the ashes of Boromatrailokanat, the western one for the ashes of Ramathibodi II, and the central one for Boromarachi II. The temple is under restoration, but this does not prevent it from remaining the center of tourist routes. UNESCO has included Wat Pra Si Sanphet in the World Heritage List.
