Wat Umong Temple

Thailand

Description:

Wat Umong is one of the most unusual temples in Thailand. It was founded in 1927.

The temple is a cave that is connected by tunnels. Translated from Thai "Umong" means "Tunnel". Inside the underground temple are Buddha statuettes illuminated by candles.

Most of the territory is occupied by a pond and forest. There are large carp and turtles in the pond. In the forest near the temple grow “wise trees”, on them there are tablets with written Buddhist sayings. The temple houses a replica of the Ashoka pillar with four lion heads and a Dharma wheel, installed in the 13th century. It is a symbol of the spread of Buddhism.

There is also a library-museum and a meditation school, classes in English.
