Bridge road across the Kwai River

Tambon Ban Tai, Chang Wat, Kanchanaburi, Thailand

Description:

The Kwai River Bridge is a historical landmark of Thailand connecting Thailand and Burma.

The bridge was built by prisoners of war during World War II. During the construction of the bridge and road for transportation, 16,000 soldiers and about 100,000 Thais died. In 1944, the bridge was destroyed by British pilots, later it was almost restored, but moved from the first place. Currently, only part of the road is used - 130 kilometers out of 415.

The bridge over Kwai, recently restored, is a tribute to the soldiers who died in its construction. Relatives of the victims still come to the bridge, as well as to military cemeteries, where the remains of prisoners of war rest. Near the bridge is a museum, the opening of which was dedicated to military events.
