Description:
Mah Dhat Temple (full name - Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahatat Voramahavihan) is a Buddhist temple located on the bank of the Nan River, near the Naresuan Bridge.
The temple was built in 1357 during the reign of King Maha Thammaradsha. The temple is known throughout Thailand for its golden Buddha images called Phra Buddha Shinnarat. Many Thais consider these sculptures to be the most beautiful Buddha images in Thailand. Here Buddha is depicted in the posture of overcoming Mara. Stone inscriptions indicate that these historical and religious monuments were cast more than 700 years ago by the king of the Mahathamaracha of the Sukhothai dynasty. Several copies of the image of the Buddha are also placed in other Thai temples.
On the territory of the temple is the National Museum of Buddha Shinnarat, which houses a significant collection of art from the Sukhothai period. Phra Buddha Shinnarat Fair is held annually on the territory of the temple.
