Description:
Wat Phra Sri Rattana Mahatat Voramahavihan, or Wat Yai, is a Buddhist temple located on the banks of the Nan River, near the Naresuan Bridge.
The temple was founded in 1357 during the reign of King Maha Thammaradsh of Sukkothai. The temple is famous throughout Thailand for its golden Buddha sculpture called Phra Buddha Shinnarat. Many people consider this image to be the most beautiful Buddha portrait in Thailand. The stone inscription indicates that the Buddha was cast more than 700 years ago by the king of the Mahatmarach Lithaya dynasty of Sukkothai.
The temple houses the National Museum of Buddha Shinnarat, which houses a significant collection of art from the Sukkothai period.
Festivals are often held in the temple grounds, including the annual Phra Buddha Shinnarat Fair.
