Tarutao National Marine Park
Description:
Tarutao Marine National Park is a park that consists of fifty-one islands. In the early twentieth century, several marine park islands were used to hold prisoners. However, during the Second World War, the prisoners staged a riot and were able to sail away from the islands in ships captured from the guards.
Tarutao National Marine Park was opened on the nineteenth of April 1974. Since then, it has become a favorite holiday destination for locals and tourists.
In the park there are rivers and swamps, which are home to rare species of Thai fish and even crocodiles. It distinguishes two main groups of islands: Adang Ravi and Tarutao. The total area of the national marine park is about one and a half thousand square kilometers. The highest point of the marine park is located at an altitude of 700 meters.
The largest island of Tarutao Park is Koh Tarutao. More than seventy percent of the entire territory of Koh Tarutao is forested.
