Description:
Green Island is a small island of volcanic origin in the Pacific Ocean. It is located 33 kilometers off the east coast of Taiwan. The area of the island is 15 square kilometers at high tide and 17 square kilometers at low tide. The island was originally inhabited by Taiwanese aborigines who called it Sanasai.
Green Island has been a place of exile for Taiwan’s most dangerous criminals and bandits.
In the 19-20 centuries, a huge number of ships of different countries sank here. In 1938, with the money of the Red Cross, a lighthouse was built on the island by a Japanese engineer.
Green Island is home to deer, goats, chameleons, giant bats, coconut crabs and sedentary and migratory birds.
You can get to the island by plane or ferry, which can accommodate more than 250 passengers. The plane arrives at Lyudao Airport, 12 minutes from Taitung.
Green Island is very popular with local and foreign divers.
More than half of the registered residents do not live on the island due to the difficulty of finding jobs.
