History of Fethiye

Ancient times - the city of Telmessos

The history of Fethiye begins in prehistoric times. Archaeological finds show that the first settlements here existed already in the second millennium BC.

In ancient times the city was called Telmessos. It was one of the largest and most important cities of Lycia, an ancient state that existed in southwestern Anatolia. The Lycians were independent and even had their own language and alphabet.

According to legend, Telmessos was founded by Apollo’s son, Telmess. The city quickly became known as a center of divination (something like the Eastern Delphic oracle). Even great rulers like Croesus turned to the Telmes priests for advice.

The age of antiquity

Telmessos became part of the Lycian Union, then - in the orbit of influence of the Persian Empire, later - Alexander the Great. After Alexander's death, the city passed from one power to another: the Ptolemies (Egypt), the Seleucids (Syria), and then Rome.

During the Roman and Byzantine periods, Telmessos continued to flourish. There was an amphitheater, temples, acropolis, numerous Lycian tombs carved directly into the rocks. The most famous of them - the tomb of Amintas (Amyntas Tomb), dating from the IV century BC, became a symbol of Fethiye.

Byzantine and medieval periods

With the collapse of the Roman Empire, Telmessos became part of Byzantium and became known as Makri. At this time, the city was an important port and trading center.

However, in the seventh century Arab raids, earthquakes and decline began. Gradually, the city decreased in size, and the population partially moved to a small island off the coast - now known as the island of St. Nicholas (Gemiler Adası), where archaeologists discovered the remains of early Christian churches.

Ottoman period

In the XV century, the territory came under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, and the city became known as Mekri. It remained a small fishing and trading settlement, but remained important due to its convenient bay.

The city was multicultural – Turks, Greeks, Armenians lived here. After the Greco-Turkish War (1919–1922) and the population exchange in 1923, the Greek population moved to Greece and Turkish families came from the Greek islands.

XX century - The birth of Fethiye

In 1934, the city received its modern name Fethiye, in honor of Fethi Bey, one of the first Turkish military pilots who died in a plane crash in 1914.

Unfortunately, in the twentieth century, the city experienced several devastating earthquakes:

  • In 1856, the old town was almost completely destroyed.

  • In 1957, a strong earthquake destroyed most of Fethiye, after which it was rebuilt.

After the restoration, Fethiye began to develop rapidly as a port and tourist center. Along the coast were built modern hotels, marinas, roads.

Modern Fethiye

Today Fethiye is one of the main resorts in Turkey, combining:

  • amazing nature (mountains, pine forests, azure sea),

Interesting places for entertainment in Fethiye

Fethiye - the pearl of the Lycian coast of Turkey

Imagine a place where the azure sea meets the emerald mountains, where ancient Lycian tombs look at a modern marina with snow-white yachts, and the morning breeze smells of sea salt and pine forests. This is Fethiye, a city that is impossible not to love.

Sea, sun and nature

Fethiye is located in southwestern Turkey, in the Mugla region, and is famous for its sandy beaches, quiet coves and crystal clear waters. The main pride - Ölüdeniz, or "Dead Sea" - an amazing Blue Lagoon, where the water is calm even in a storm. This is one of the most photographed places in the world – a real symbol of the Turkish Riviera.

On the other side of the lagoon is Mount Babadağ, from the top of which paragliders hover like gulls. Jumping from a height of more than 1900 meters offers a view that takes your breath away: the whole bay, the azure sea, the islands and forests of Lycia - as in the palm of your hand.
