Archaeological Museum of Izmir

Birle mi Milletler Cd No:1, Ye iltepe Mh., 35480 Konak/zmir, Turkey

About the company:

In 1927 the Archaeological Museum in Izmir opened its doors for the first time. The opening of the museum was preceded by about three years of searching for works of art that eluded foreign archaeologists. In connection with the increase in the collection, another museum was opened in the Park of Culture in 1951. Subsequently, a project was developed and a large building covering an area of about 5,000 square meters was built in Bahribaba Park in Konaka, which opened in 1984.

The permanent exposition of the museum currently has more than one and a half thousand exhibits discovered during archaeological excavations in the ancient settlements of Bergama, Iasos, Bayrakla and Chandarly. In the courtyard of the museum there are capitals, columns and huge amphorae. In the lobby hangs a map of Turkey, which indicates the borders of ancient states located in the country centuries ago. On the upper floor of the museum are exhibited artifacts and works brought from ancient settlements - ceramics, glass vases, works of Hellenic culture, bottles and statuettes. On the first and middle floors of the museum there are marble exhibits: busts, masks, portraits, statues. The exposition on the lower floor is dedicated to funerary culture. Here you can see a rich collection of stelae, tombs, marble sarcophagi.
