Uchhisar Fortress

Gereme, Nevsehir near highway D302

Description:

Uchhisar in Turkish means “three fortresses”. This sixty-meter cliff, rising 1400 m above sea level, is perfectly visible from any point of Cappadocia.

History is silent about who came up with the idea to adapt this rock for a fortress, but it is known that in the role of a fortress it served in the era of the Hittites (Bronze Age), not to mention Rome and Byzantium.

Under the Seljuks, this fortress, along with Bashhisar and Ortahisar, was of great importance in the matter of defense. A signal system was established between the fortresses, which ensured the exchange of information at a distance. The water supply was provided with a water pipe length of 3 km.

Inside Uchhisar is dotted with innumerable tunnels and rooms, and although the entrance to most of them is now closed, the grandeur of the structure can not help but feel. From the top of the fortress there is a magnificent view of the surrounding area, where the Ercias, Hasan and Melindiz volcanoes are clearly visible.
