Merkez Mh., 07980 Kemer/Antalya, Turkey
Description:
The Church of St. Nicholas in Demre is one of the most popular attractions. It belongs to the Byzantine period (6th century). It was built on the site of the temple of Artemis. The room inside is very beautiful, attracting the attention of frescoes and paintings of the 11-12 centuries, preserved to our time. The floor is decorated with stone mosaics. On the walls are Christian symbols, which later became used in card suits. There is also a marble sarcophagus in which St. Nicholas is buried. The building is built in the shape of a cross. Initially, the top decorated the dome, but then was replaced by a vault. The central hall has good acoustics, which priests used for prayers. In the courtyard you can see preserved from ancient times columns, stone slabs decorated with patterns. Today, the church does not function as a temple, it is only a museum. Only on December 6, worship services are held once a year.
You can get there by dolmushi (local minibus) or with an organized tour.
