Madrasah Muhammad Aminkhan: the largest madrasah of Khiva
Description:
One of the main attractions located in the historical part of the city of Ichankale is the madrasah of Muhammad Aminhan. This is the largest madrasah not only in Khiva, but throughout Central Asia. The two-storey building covers an area of 72 by 60 meters, and has 125 hujras (cells) designed for 260 students. The uniqueness of this educational institution was that each hujra consisted of two rooms, and the hujras located on the second floor had a room and loggia overlooking the facade of the building.
The madrasah was built in 1851-1854, by order of the ruler of Khiva, Muhammad Aminkhan, and received his name. Above the building there are five domes and corner towers. The facade is decorated with rich decor of glazed brick, wooden doors abound with ornamental carvings, majolica cladding strikes with plant patterns, and above the entrance there is an inscription in Arabic "This beautiful structure will forever stand for the joy of descendants."
Madrasah Muhammad Aminkhan is located opposite another attraction of Khiva - Kunya-Arka, at the gate of Ata-Darvaz. And right in front of the building stands one of the main symbols of the city - the minaret of Kalta Minor, the construction of which was led by the same Muhammad Aminhan. But the Khan was killed, and the minaret, which was to become one of the highest in the world, was never completed - instead of 70 meters, its height is only 29 meters.
