Cardiff Central Market

Cardiff Market, St Mary Street, Cardiff CF1 2AU, Wales, United Kingdom

Description:

For more than 150 years, Cardiff Central Market has been a place where you can always find fresh food, ready meals, as well as household goods for every taste. The current building was designed by Borough Surveyor and William Harper, and opened in 1891. Previously, the same place was already a market, trading since the 1700s and sharing this territory with a prison and gallows.

In the past, a spontaneous farm market with a tether for cattle, now the market is an impressive Victorian building with a glass roof, located in the heart of Cardiff. The retail space occupies two levels, the market also has a basement floor and a balcony encircling the building around the perimeter outside. The market has three exits leading to different streets - St Mary Street, Trinity Street and Church Street Lane.

Some old traditions and entrenched sellers continue to exist many years later. According to the Ashtons, the family has been selling fresh seafood since 1866. A few more similar family cases, dating back about 100 years, can be found on the market.
