Llandaff Cathedral

Cathedral Close, Llandaff, Cardiff CF5 2LA, Wales, United Kingdom

Description:

Cardiff Cathedral according to Welsh tradition is named after the area where it is located - Llandaff. Now here is the residence of the bishop of the diocese. To get to Llandaff Cathedral, you will have to distance yourself from the center of Cardiff.

It is one of the oldest places of worship in the city. The building of the cathedral was built in the XII century, and before it there was an even more ancient church on this site. Now there is no trace of it, but found here Celtic cross suggests that the Christian shrine existed before the arrival of the Normans.

In the XIX century, when the bishop's residence was organized in the cathedral, it was reconstructed, the tower was rebuilt and a beautiful spire was added. The second rebirth of the cathedral occurred in the 50s of the twentieth century, after a bomb fell on the building in 1941, during the Second World War. The opening of the temple in 1960 was attended by the Queen.

The cathedral is also worth visiting for the sake of a new organ - it appeared here after lightning struck the cathedral in 2007, causing the old organ to malfunction. In addition to organ music, Llandaff Cathedral is justifiably proud of its traditional male choir, as well as the less common choir of girls.
