Kairfilly Castle

Castle Street, Caerphilly, UK

Description:

Kairfilly Castle is one of the largest castles located in south Wales. The castle deserves the title of one of the most beautiful castles of the Middle Ages.

The castle was built between 1268 and 1271 by Lord Gilbert de Clair to protect its territories. In 1283 the castle lost its defensive importance and was abandoned. It began to collapse and fall into decay. Three generations of Bute marquises tried to revive it by restoring some elements of architecture. The castle has a feature - the slope of the south-eastern tower, which occurred in the XVII century during the Civil War.

The castle has many inner and wall transitions that help to quickly move from one part to another. The outer courtyard of the castle is framed by a jagged wall with protrusions at the corners and donjons for the entrance, opening a good view of the territory outside the castle. There are exhibitions in the castle towers today. The official apartment and the Great Hall, which was restored in the XIX century, are located on the south side of the courtyard.

Now the castle is managed by the Agency for the protection of historical buildings of Wales "Cadoo" and is considered a unique example of wartime architecture of the XIII century.
