Shambles Square
4 Cathedral Approach, Manchester, Greater Manchester M3 1SW, UK
Description:
Manchester’s most beautiful Shambles Square has been around for over two hundred years. The atmosphere of old England is especially felt here, with its half-timbered houses and the smell of traditional beer.
Once upon a time, this square was a meat market, where cattle were slaughtered and meat was immediately sold. The spectacle was unaesthetic, and of it, fortunately, only the name of the square remained. But there are two old houses that now contain famous beer pubs. The first of these, the Old Wellingtog Inn, was built in 1552 and originally housed a manufacturing shop. In the XVIII century, another house was built in it, the owners of which received a license to trade alcohol. In the newly added part there was a pub called Sinclair's Oyster Bar - Sinclair Oyster Bar - here, starting from 1845, included in the menu of exotic oysters.
As a result of the renovation and expansion of the area, the old houses were under threat of demolition. It was decided to move them. The houses were carefully dismantled, and then carefully assembled, but in a different place. At the same time, however, they were placed at an angle to each other, thus creating two sides of the new Shambles Square. The third side is closed by the facade of the Mitre Hotel, built in 1815. A small space in front of two old houses in summer turns into a traditional meeting place for residents of the city. Here, over a glass of beer, the latest political news and the results of the Manchester United games are discussed.
