St. Denis Church

51 St Denys' Rd, York, North Yorkshire County YO1 9QD, UK

Description:

St. Denis parish church is one of the oldest in York. It was founded in the XII century on the site of a Roman temple, traces of which were discovered during the study of the foundation of the church.

The size of this building is significantly different from the original. Due to a series of historical failures, the tower’s transepts and spire were destroyed. At the end of the XX century, an extensive reconstruction of the structure was completed, including the restoration of the Victorian tower. A notable feature of the church is an array of beautiful medieval stained glass windows illuminating its modest interior. They are located on seven lancet windows and are exceptional even for York standards. Sculptures of Norman and heraldic roofs of the XV century are also worthy of attention.

Church services and ceremonies are still held in the church, accompanied by chants of the church choir. There is a memorial dedicated to the memory of heroes who died during the First World War.

The Church of St. Denis is a unique tourist attraction and a historical monument of architecture.
