High Petergate, York YO1 7EN, United Kingdom
Description:
St. Michael’s Church in York is the most spacious and elegant of all the parish churches in the city. The building was built in 1536 in the early English style. The building was built on the site of the old medieval church Belfrey, from which the temple got its name.
Above the main entrance there is a large window with buttresses, topped by a tower with a bell tower. Through the church hall passes an arcade consisting of six spans. Its vaults are skillfully painted with episodes from the lives of saints. The arches are supported by cast-iron columns decorated with pilasters. Above the altar is a mosaic depicting St. Michael defeating Satan. On the east windows there are several stained glass windows with episodes from the life of St. Thomas.
Two choirs of different age categories are present at all services and ceremonies. The Church of St. Michael le Belfrey is of great historical value and is very popular with tourists.
