St. Olav's Church

Marygate, York YO30 7BZ, United Kingdom

Description:

A significant historical landmark of York is the Church of St. Olav, founded in 1055. This ancient temple is dedicated to a Norwegian warrior who participated in the capture of British territory. After some time he converted to Christianity and participated in the construction of the temple.

The church was rebuilt in the XV and XVIII centuries, so its current appearance is significantly different from the original. Accordingly, three architectural styles are intertwined here: Norman, Early English and Gothic. Around the entire perimeter of the building, decorated with buttresses, there are wide lancet windows. Above the main entrance to the building is a statue of St. Olav. Through the entire church hall there is a wide nave, consisting of four spans. Large eastern windows are decorated with beautiful stained glass windows depicting episodes from the life of St. Olav. The altar is decorated in golden flowers and decorated with openwork carvings.

The church has a large choir with which services and ceremonies are held. Active social work is carried out in the temple, seminars, conferences are held, a parish school is opened.
