St. Wilfried's Church

St. Leonard Pl, New York YO1 7HD, United Kingdom

Description:

One of the historical attractions of York is the Roman Catholic Church of St. Wilfrid, located near York Cathedral. It was founded on the site of an old Roman chapel, destroyed in the XVI century.

The current building was built in 1864 in neo-Gothic style for Irish immigrants. In the western wing of the church, a wide square tower with buttresses was built, 44 meters high. On its upper level there is a bell tower with 10 bells. The arch above the main entrance is decorated with the rarest Victorian carvings in York. Along the church hall there is a massive nave with cast-iron columns topped with pilasters. The Church of St. Wilfrid is famous for its magnificent decoration - there are ancient sculptures and paintings depicting episodes from the lives of saints. The western windows are decorated with bright stained glass.

All kinds of services and ceremonies are held in the temple, accompanied by organ music and chants of the church choir. Active community work is being carried out here, a primary school for children is open.

St. Wilfried's Church is an architectural monument popular with tourists.
