Monk Bar Fortress
Description:
Monk Bar Fortress, or Monk Gate, is the largest and one of the most ornate fortresses in England. It dates back to the early 14th century. Once it was an autonomous fortress, securely protected on each of its floors.
In the foreground is an arch with a gallery, including "kill holes" through which soldiers shot at attackers on the fortress and poured boiling water and tar on their heads.
Monk Bar, like many other fortresses of this type located in England, originally had a barbican, but later it was demolished, as the owners believed that it was not necessary - protection is at the proper level.
Throughout the history of its existence, the fortress performed various functions and roles, being a defensive fortress, a prison, and a home. Now the Monk's Gate is a notable landmark of York, which gladly welcomes visitors.
